Igshaan Adams\u2019 background, marked by the multi-ethnic culture and daily life of Cape Town, serves as inspiration for his works. I Am You <\/em>is based on an earlier performance in which he takes on a meditative Muslim prayer position under a cloth. The form of the sculpture is clear, but it is also mysteriously evasive. Even in the absence of specific features, the sculpture suggests the presence of a body. Adams contains a multitude of identities that have given rise to internal conflicts but also a unique ability to transcend boundaries. In his work, he creates parallels between life as a practicing Muslim and as an artist. He often works with textiles-fabrics that cover, conceal and dissolve, in which he combines presence and absence, surface and depth. Islam is central to his art and his identity in relation to religion, but he also poses the question\u2014who am I beyond my identity? <\/p>\n\n\n\n
