The bench is something Jeppe Hein has been working with since 2000. He alters the traditional construction and viewers have to try to relate to them. The benches become active rather than just a place to rest. Hein combines the conventional notion of the bench as functional, with an artistic aspiration to create a dialogue between the artwork and the viewer. The benches were a part of his exhibition A Smile For You<\/em> in 2013. Hein describes the concept: \u201dSome works will appeal to the visitor\u2019s senses; others will demand their active involvement. Some will create a funny situation that encourages people to start talking to each other; others present viewers with fundamental questions that only they can answer. All offer people a moment of being \u2019right here right now\u2019 \u2013 and a smile.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
