Jene Highstein was active in the New York City art scene beginning in the early 1970s. He was inspired early on by the minimalist art movement, and worked with clear forms and pure materials. In contrast to many of his predecessors, who worked with strict, geometric forms, Highstein was interested in the raw and organic. Highstein carried out several projects simultaneously at Wan\u00e5s in 1990. He created two sculptures in oak and had Grey Clam<\/em> casted, a monumental concrete sculpture that still remains in the park. His artworks draw attention to specific forms, colors, and materials and give a presence to the place in which they are displayed. Horizontal<\/em> is made of massive cast iron, a material he returned to in several other cast sculptures. The sculpture\u2019s accessible size and gentle lines are an invitation to play and rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
