Tadashi Kawamata builds large-scale sculptures. Early in his artistic career he worked in the overcrowded city of Tokyo, and took advantage of forgotten spaces in the urban landscape to build structures wedged between the extant architecture. He always works in relation to his surroundings and to existing architecture in his winding forms. By adding architecture, he draws attention to that which we often overlook. He covers the exterior of a building, joins together two places or makes a structure under a window. With bridges, piers and towers, Kawamata creates new possibilities for getting around. His artwork combines sculpture, architecture and movement. If we step up into the sculpture, onto the platforms amongst the tree branches, we have the opportunity to view Maya Lin\u2019s artwork Eleven Minute Line<\/em> from 2004, a line built up from an earthen embankment in the old pasture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
