The herding call that sounds every afternoon at 3:25 pm from Andrea Ray’s audio work Recall is called “kulning,” a Scandinavian song form that was traditionally practiced by women to call the cows in and to communicate with each other from a distance. The audio is performed by Susanne Rosenberg, one of Sweden’s foremost kulning experts. The contrast between contemporary recording technology and the ancient song form parallel today’s modern cowshed and the surrounding pastures on which animals have grazed since the 1500s. At Wanås, Ray’s audio installation brings together the past and the present, tradition and technology, farming on the estate and its artistic ventures.
