Diabase is an igneous rock mined in Hägghult, a short distance northeast of Wanås. In 1996, six Nordic artists showed their works in black diabase at Wanås. Pål Svensson participated with the work Sprung From and Twisted Column (1994). The reflective surface of Sprung From interacts with the surrounding nature, and the contrast between the work’s irregular chips and the perfect form of the massive sphere make it appear that the sphere hatched right on that spot. It also hearkens to the process behind the realization of the work, the core being successively coaxed forth by the artist. Since the early 1980s, Svensson has explored the possibilities of stone, specifically diabase, through his sculptures and installations. He searches for the diametric opposite of stone and sets soft against hard, polished against rough, wet against dry.
