Poul Gernes Pyramide was initially a submission to a sculpture contest in 1967 for a public artwork at Grønttorv, now called Israels Plads, in Copenhagen. The submission was not selected, but in 2016, the work was temporary constructed at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark, after a reworking by artist Anders Krüger of Gernes’ original sketch. During his lifetime, Gernes created several large-scale public artworks, characterized by vivid colours and geometric forms. He wanted to create art that was intelligible and appealing and to impact the environments and people who were surrounded by art. The sculpture emphasizes Gernes’ beliefs about the social role of art. In his sketch, he placed many people on the pyramid; it is a lively gathering place. Through a generous donation from Klaras Karolines Fond, established by Aase and Poul Gernes, the sculpture has received a permanent place in the park of Wanås Konst.
