Take a Good Look

Isabella Rossellini

About

“If I were a dragonfly, I would…” In her short film series Green Porno, Seduce Me, and Mammas, Isabella Rossellini portrays animals and insects indulging their sexual instincts. Through the installation’s peepholes, visitors encounter animals and insects and their mating rituals, seduction strategies, and parenting behaviors. Rossellini both directs and performs, and is involved in all aspects of the production, from research to script and costume. When she takes on the role of a cuckoo, deer or bee, she embraces the animal’s perspective and creates a portrait that is as humorous as it is informative.

Rossellini is deeply engaged in issues relating not only to nature and the environment, but also to animal emotions and behavior. The short films were created following a request from the Sundance Film Festival to produce a series of short films on environmental themes. The project has resulted in around forty films and has been shown at both film festivals and natural history museums. Take a Good Look is presented in close proximity to the habitats of the species it portrays, from spiders in the barn to earthworms in their underground world. Wanås Sculpture Park is home to more than 45 red-listed species, and since 2020 parts of the park have been designated as a nature reserve.
