The bench is something Jeppe Hein has been working with since 2000. He alters the traditional construction and viewers have to try to relate to them. The benches become active rather than just a place to rest. Hein combines the conventional notion of the bench as functional, with an artistic aspiration to create a dialogue between the artwork and the viewer. The benches were a part of his exhibition A Smile For You in 2013. Hein describes the concept: ”Some works will appeal to the visitor’s senses; others will demand their active involvement. Some will create a funny situation that encourages people to start talking to each other; others present viewers with fundamental questions that only they can answer. All offer people a moment of being ’right here right now’ – and a smile.”
