The title in Roxy Paine’s Façade/Billboard refers to large advertising billboards, but here, the advertisement has been replaced with a large tree cut from black sheet metal. Since the beginning of his career, Paine has experimented with uniting art and industrial manufacturing. With nature as his motif, he melds the natural with the artificial instead of juxtaposing them. In the 1990s, he constructed machines that produced paintings and sculptures, and in other artworks, he has meticulously recreated nature in plastic and metal. In his very first exhibition at Wanås in 1998, he laid puddles of water made from glass outdoors while presenting an artificial lawn called Bad Lawn inside. Roxy Paine has also created the metal tree Impostor that stands in the park.
