Roxy Paine created Impostor for the exhibition at Wanås in 1999. Branches from the park served as the model for the tree that was constructed and welded on site in the park. Paine has experimented with uniting art and industrial manufacturing for a long time. After the work Impostor, Paine continued creating variations of tree-like sculptures made from stainless steel. He has increased the scale for several of them, and today 16 unique artworks together comprise a series the artist calls Dendroids. This neologism is a portmanteau of “dendrology,” the study of trees, and “androids,” robots created to resemble humans. He melds the natural with the artificial in his artworks instead of juxtaposing them. Paine has also created the tree artwork Façade/Billboard, which stands permanently near the Wanås parking lot.
